I am looking for references to historical training methods used in preparation for warfare. We are all familiar with the late period jousting Tournaments. Most of us are also familiar with the earlier melee tournaments where knights fought in teams using potentially deadly weapons and ransomed each other. I would like to hear of any other known training methods used with references.
One of my favorite that I have come across is "Behourdium" where they used three foot clubs to substitute swords in melee tournaments.

No athlete/youth can fight tenaciously who has never received any blows: he must see his blood flow and hear his teeth crack... then he will be ready for battle.
