Yes, it is a British P1796 LC sword. Are there any maker names or government inspection marks on it? Here is a good article on conservation:

Thanks for the propt reply - from what I read it looks like its perhaps best to leave the sword in its 'found' condition - as long as it is kept dry no further damage should occur.

I cannot see any obvious marks - where should I be looking?

I probably should not ask but any idea of value?
