Oakeshot X in the 12th Century
Hi guys,
I'm looking into getting a custom made sword for 12th Century Re-enactment, I really would like to get a oakeshott type X blade made (I really like its wide fuller). I'm pretty sure Oakeshot type X blade is still authentic for that century but I was wondering if anyone knows of specific finds that date from between 1100 and 1250ish? (Being a relatively poor bloke I can only afford one sword so I want to be able to go: This find is from our period therefore these swords where definitely used then.)

Cheers
Marcus
Did you already look up the feature section?

I can't give you a specific example, but it was common for old, but still serviceable blades, to be rehilted many years after they were forged. You could go with this idea, putting a 12th century hilt on a type X blade.

I'd have to check, but isn't there is a type Xa sword in Records with a 14th(?) century hilt?
Yes but it merely says "Well into the Middle Ages" and the later finds on that article are technically type Xa.

Look at this article - http://www.myArmoury.com/feature_oakeshott2.html

Maybe you should put on a very generic hilt, like the one on the Albion Bayeux.
Thanks guys,
To be honest I am really a bit shocked at how fast you replied to my post! I was expecting to log off and come back in the morning. I'm ordering it with a plain Brazil Nut Pommel, and a simpe straight crossguard, which is baisically one of two things my group accepts (generally we are only supposed to have Disk, or Brazil Nut Pommels and Straight quillons, though some people have broken this rule.)
Cheers
Marcus
