After a couple of fruitless arguments I tabulated the dates Ewart assigned to swords by type to see the pattern of dates. these are Oakeshott's dates in Records and a couple of other things he wrote. this suggests that by the time you get to the 15th c., all manner of sword types were probably in use.
I also find it interesting that all of his dates for Type XVI fall in a very narrow window of time. tr

That's really neat Thom!
I like that- a lot in info in one convenient graph. I'm just responding to your snazzy graph- not really on your proposition.
Thanks,
Jeremy

Cool! Thanks. This is nice to see, it really helps plot out the changes in sword design throughout the years.

Thom, that's really brilliant. About the XVI, I always seem to see more XVIa than true XVI single handers ( Though this is not necessarily true), and they don't appear on your graph, which may skew the data away from the type as a whole. That is, however, an incredibly narrow window for such a not only striking but practical sword.

How cool. Nice idea. A lot going on in the 14th (and 15th) century!

Thank you!
One small note. The XVI isn't on the legend and I don't see XVIa.
Thanks again,

The XVI is in the legend, it's just below XVIIIa... Not sure why it ended up there.
