For me and my medieval style interests, I can lay the blame squarely at the feet of C.S Lewis and his narnia series, reading them as a 9 year old kid, I grew up with flailing fence pickets in the backyard as broadswords, causing many a bruise on myself and my mates who dared cross 'blades' with me. Then of course the Princess Bride was shown to me and it was rapiers, but of course the poor plastic things you'd buy from the corner store didn't last long in the hands of a 10yr old hell bent on avenging his father like Inigo Montoya. So there you have it, I was psychologically invested in steel from a young age...pity I still haven't grown up ha!

So in the spirit of getting to know you lot better, what's your story?

by the way, if anyone can point me in the direction of good quality rapiers that are replicas of Wesley and Inigo's I'd appreciate it...a boys dream it may be to own them, but its the man that wants to learn how to fence like them

I hardly thought I'd be the only one to ask the question, perhaps, I should have made it more pertinent to my second question, aka where to find replicas of the Princess Bride Rapiers....perhaps that would have been more direct, but a little abrupt considering I'm the newbie. So ignore any compulsion to reply to the thread in regards to your burgeoning collecting etc etc, as I'd hate to clog the forum with old news. So...gentlemen and ladies, wherefore might I look for such screen gems as those rapiers eh?

It's not so much whether something is old news as whether there is a need to have multiple discussion threads that deal with the same topic. People are always welcome to discuss aspects of their collections and collecting habits (Nathan Robinson's collection was the genesis of this site after all), but if the question has been discussed before, any new discussion should be attached to the old thread to avoid having multiple sources of similar information.

As you can see, there are already a number of threads that touch on various aspects of collecting. We need not reinvent the wheel since we can revive these old discussions with new posts.

Regarding the princess bride swords, you might have to have something like that custom made. A man named Glen Parrell used to do stuff like that but his website is defunct. Many custom makers would discuss the project with you, though they won't be cheap.

Paul MacDonald of MacDonald Armouries has also reproduced them: http://www.historicalfencing.org/Macdonaldarmory/montoya.htm . Again, I can't vouch for the accuracy to the original nor its functionality. He may have made the swords shown on the page linked in the previous paragraph.

Hey chad,

No worries, I guessed as much, your servers couldn't handle all the repetitious multiple threads if they were created willy nilly with no structure, so I do understand. Thank you for attending to my request, I found the replicas rather interesting to say the least, but as you said if i want them, I'll have to get them custom made, so I have started my journey of contacting people in the business of custom swords, and then the time it will take and the funds needed, but as with anything anyone thinks is worth it, it takes time Cheers
I'll stick to the relevant threads once i start posting pictures of my kit and manning imperial sword, without creating new threads

Simon, another way to approach this is to look for a similar style of rapier or one close enough to appeal to you as being " different " but close enough.

As a quick reference, and assuming you haven't seen these before ( I have no idea how much research you have done or how familiar with what is out there, so maybe this will be helpful ).

Sure none of these are an exact match of the movie sword, mostly decorative details, but some could be considered of the same family.

So it depends on your priorities: A copy of the movie sword(s) or a nice rapier of similar functionality and structure/style. ( Rings, branches and blade type )

Perhaps a new members forum, where you can introduce yourself officially, show your collection associated with your intoduction thread might cut down on similar threads in different forums. This practice has worked in several other forums I post on, as you can look up any relevant material associated with a particular person you wish to ask a question of, kind of like a reference thread, "Oh, i wanted to talk to Chad about that sword of his, now was it him or was it one of the others with that pappenheimer, hang on, I'll check out his thread" kind of thing. would that work, or is the off topic forum kind of like that already?

Or you could just look at the members list and see that stuff already I guess, the place has got all aspects covered...oh well I'll limit my contributions to talking of arms and armur rather than the structure of the place lol...

We don't have a dedicated "Welcome" forum. People that want to introduce themselves have used the Off-topic Talk forum for that. Most, though, simply introduce themselves as they post their first question or response. We haven't seen the need for anything more extensive than that so far.

People do post items from their collections very frequently, either in collection-specific threads or when that item (or a similar one) comes up in discussion. When I want info on a certain product, I search to see if it's been talked about already. Chances are, it has.

If you are displaying your collection in a thread or parts of it, Historical Arms Talk is the place for it, assuming most of the items are historical.

A few of us have our Collection Galleries online here. I have a forum thread that deals with items I've received that may not have made it into my gallery yet.

In any user's posts, you can click a link to find all their posts. Or you can use the Search function and search by username and keyword to find out, for example, if Chad Arnow has posted about polearms before.

We do happily take suggestions in the sub-forum designed for that purpose. If you have any ideas, that's the place for them.
