Up for sale is a post Revolultionary War Pre Civil War American Eagle Head Light Artillery Officer's saber with a Kentland style guard. I am asking $800 dollars plus 20.00 for shipping and handling within the United StatesThe style of this sword was specificed in the regulations of 1801, and the slotted guard was popular in the post revolutionary time frame. Many of these swords were used in the early days of the Civil War when available due to the shortness on both sides of edged weapons. This is a fighting sword as shown by the curved sweeping blade and the minor nicks reflected in the pictures on the cutting edge of the sword. The blade is approx 30 inches long from the edge of the guard to the point, and is a hefty inch and a quarter wide with an inch wide fuller up to 7 inches from the point. The fluted bone handle is approximately 5 inches long.and is of the eagle head design popular on swords of this style of this era. The handle is of the Kentland style and is composed of three brances. The middle segment of the bottom portion of the guard has a crack. The blade retains an edge and shows no sign of sharpening. Numerous etchings cover half of the blade on both sides with traces of the gilding which at one time highlighted the designs. The blade is dark from age over 70% of the surface, but presents well and is not rusted however there is one area of pitting approximately 3 inches long on one side of the blade and an inch long on the other. Due to the darkness of the blade, they do not detract form a most impressive appearance. The handle appears to be of bone with a fluted liniar design popular in that era, and has an inch chip.. The guard is a little loose and shows wear, but only a little. For the sake of accuracy, I have described every flaw on the sword, but they sound worse than they appear. This is an impressive looking sword that has been used and one can only wish it could talk to tell us of its history.

This style of sword is described and pictured in Petersen's "The American Sword" as an Artillery Platoon Officers Sword Model 1805 - 1815, and is shown on page 564 of Richard Bezdek's book on "American Swords and Sword Makers".
I will have pictures up Monday morning!!!
This is a lovely piece of history that must be given up to the sword gods to make way for new blades!!!!
