Hey everyone!
Have a sword that I was wondering if anyone else was aware of and knew about...
The "Cawood Sword" is a late Viking styled sword found in the River Ouse near the village of Cawood in North Yorkshire 50 years ago has been recently spotlighted and highly publicized by the media and press.

the sword is back home in York after being kept behind closed doors by a private collector for many years and is now being displayed at Yorkshire Museum, where it will go on show for the first time in its home county.
It is said to be one of only 2 known swords like it in the world and is extremely unique because it is right on the cusp of two styles of swords, Viking and Medieval.
I personally think it’s an absolutely beautiful sword and want to learn more about it.
I did searching here on myArmoury for more info about the sword but as far as my search went it looks like no one here has directly spoken about it??..
The one fact about the sword that seems to remain a mystery is the inscriptions on the blade.
Archaeologists can apparently read each letter but they do not sound out a known word. it seems that they must be initials or represent a saying of sorts.
I simply would like to know what each letter is and how it would appear clearly.
but all my searching has come up with nothing, and even in the highest res image of the sword you cannot make them out:

The reason I want to know these specific facts is because I am planning on forging a reproduction of this sword, and would like it to be as accurate as possible.
Any help or known facts on this sword would be great!

But I STILL would like to know if anyone has info on the letters on the actual sword itself.

Ah wow....
I cant believe I did not find that sooner.... Sorry about that.
Looks like the runes are still a mystery to the discussion there as well... darn
What I really need is a closeup photo of the letters in the fuller. that would be ideal.

You're welcome, glad I could be of help.
It's a little hard to tell, but I think that from what Oakeshott said and from looking at the Hi-res pic that was posted on the other thread.... that the second inscription on iii and iv respectively are the one's on this particular sword. I believe that the first inscription in each is actually from the Norwegian sword which this one parallels. (I believe Oakeshott was comparing how similar the inscriptions were, but If someone knows for sure, it would be great to know).

After cross-referencing with Claude Blair, I discovered that iv is the Cawood inscriptiions, while iii is the Norwegian inscriptions.
