If you read the Armour Archive or the Arms and Armour forums these questions have already been posted there.

My group's been talking about getting bucklers ordered en masse for reenactment and WMA use, so before I order or put my two cents in I have a couple questions which I'll post.

A)Is there any evidence in non-German (particularly Flemish or French) sources for the funny-looking Bucklers in Talhoffer? They'd be pricey, but they look pretty cool.

B)What evidence is there for 'black from the forge,' painted, blued or otherwise non-shiny metal bucklers?

William,

In regards to your first question, John Clement's essay "The Sword and Buckler Tradition" states: "Talhoffer also included a unique flared octagonal buckler." I'd say your chances of finding other examples like this are probably slim to none.

Check This One and see if it's close enough.

This buckler was posted in an old topic but the original poster did not know who made it.

I think a reason why they made most buckers round was because people liked to carry them on their belts while walking around. Not having flaring points was better if you fell on it.

I really like that interpretation of the Talhoffer buckler, but 611 Euros is just way too high for an item of that nature. It should be more in the $200-$400 range.
