A Silver Mounted Pappenheimer Rapier

German around 1630. Double edged blade of hexagoal section with triple fuller in the upper third with an illegible monogram. There is an orb stamped on both sides at the end of the fullering, as can often be found on Solingen blades. Heavy iron hilt of the Pappenheimer type, with the surface done in masterly filigree relief with inlaid silver floral bands. Iron grip winding with braided ferrules. Length 130.5 cm.
A very similar hilt, perhaps made in the same workshop, is to be found on a Pappenheimer rapier with a blade by Andreas Munsten in the Deutsches Klingenmuseum (German Blade Museum) at Solingen, Inventory Number 43.33, see Hanns-Ulrike Haedeke, "Blankwaffen - Führer durch die Austellung, Köln 1982" (Edged Weapons - A Guide to the Exhibition - Cologne 1982) p. 84, and color plate on p. 85. Another silver encrusted Pappenheimer rapier was found at Hever Castle. See Sotheby's May 1983. Lot 12.
Also see the left hand dagger in the Waddeston Collection, No. 74, Fig. 81, that, along with the rapier offered here, might have been part of a set.
Extraordinarily rare and splendid version of this almost always unpretentious, sober type of edged weapon.





Pappenheimer Rapier

german/dutch around 1630. Lightly ridged, wavy edged blade with a double fullered ricasso on both sides. Iron, cut knucklebow hilt with s-shaped quillons. The two inset parrying plates have small round and quatrefoil perforations. Slightly beveled pommel with braided ferrules and zigzag, braided, iron wire wrapping. Length 120 cm

Pappenheim Rapier

German/Dutch around 1630. Double edged, long, thrusting blade with rhomboid cross-section. The cut iron knucklebow hilt has straight quillons with reinforced ends. Inset guard plate with fine star-shaped and circular perforations. Flat oval pommel with braided wire wrapping and ferrules of iron. Length 124 cm.






Pappenheim Rapier

german around 1630. Long double edged blade with fullers on both sides, the point and ricasso later attachments. An inlaid brass sun mark on the reverse side of the blade. Iron knucklebow hilt with straight quillons, cut at the ends. The two guard plates have small star-shaped perforations. Eight-sided, pear shaped, iron pommel with braided ferrules and spiral iron wire wrapping. Length 129 cm.
