Books
Hi there

I just bit the bullet and purchased 2 books based on the excellent reviews I read on the features page.

SWORDS OF THE VIKING ERA

and

ARMS AND ARMOUR OF THE MEDIEVEL KNIGHT

these will be my first European Weapon editions to my mainly Nihonto based library.
I managed to pick up hardbound versions of both.

Next I would like to get RECORDS OF THE MEDIEVEL SWORD, but at this point I couldn't find an affordable hardbound version.

Can any one make any recommendations for novels set in either of the above periods, I don't mind pure fiction or history based fiction.

Many thanks, am glad I came over to this forum, it is great to read informative posts without being swamped by the anime-generation.

Cheers

Jason
For good medieval novels read anything written by Sharon Penman

Jason,
Those are good choices. Getting Records of the Medieval Sword is another good choice, though that book is best in conjunction with The Sword in the Age of Chivalry.

Hardcover editions are scarce and expensive. I haven't seen one for less than $125 in a while (they're often much more). The paperback version is much more affordable, but can come apart. You may be able to pick up a paperback version and have it rebound for a good deal less than a Boydell hardcover.
Thanks for the recommendations fellas!

Any other period fiction authors for me to check out?

I'd recommend Bernard Cornwell's Alfred Series (The Last Kingdom, The Pale Horsemen, Lords of the North and Sword Song) and his Grail Quest Series (Harlequin, Vagabond, Heretic).

I second this, although in the States, the Grail Quest's first book was called the Archer's Tale. I would also reccomend the Warlord Trilogy by Cornwell.
I third the recommendation for Bernard Cornwell's Saxon/Alfred series, which are some of the best (and most bad-ass) Anglo-Saxon/Viking era novels I've encountered so far.
thanks for the recommendations! I've just picked up Bernard Cornwells - eerTHe last Kingdom.
