Promethean Arms Summit
[ Linked Image ]

OlliN Sword Design and The Guilde of St. Michael are hosting the 1st annual Promethean Arms Summit. The goal of the summit is to provide passionate research and insight into historic and contemporary edged weapon design, construction, and usage through interactive lecture and demonstration. GSM will be giving a lecture on Infantry combat weapons/medical demo. They will also have their impressive cache of weapons on display. OlliN will be there to talk about custom design today and will also have much of our inventory there on display. We are very excited to have Bob Charron talking about Swords in Medieval Culture.

The summit will be October 13, 2007 from 12:30 - 6:00pm in Monroe, WI. More info and details can be found on the OlliN website or you can follow the link here http://www.ollinsworddesign.com/osd-PAS.html.

Best,

Matt
We are very excited to be working with OlliN Sword designs on this project. Some of the original items we will be bringing for show and tell include a 17th century Walloon cavalry sword, 16th century Spanish swivel gun, a late 17th century pistol barrel being refited for use, and a 16th/17th century swiss pike.

What I've been impressed about OlliN lately are the really special kind of projects they can take on like making a fuller on an already mounted sword that they couldn't or the client was unwilling to take apart, making the job that much more difficult.

They seem to be able to be more than just sword makers but more like a general arms specialists who will take on varied and unusual projects that can cross over into restoration, art, rebuilding or customizations.

Stuff few would even consider attempting or imaginative weapons related art !

I know that my next project with them is not 100% confirmed ( 99.999% ) but will be a Mesoamerican walking stick/warclub and very sculptural: It's great to have a place that can make almost any weird project one can imagine or that will at least consider doing it if it's within their competencies to make. :D
There's nothing I like more than projects that are a bit "different". They bring challenges and interest that makes work, and life in general, stimulating. The walking stick is definitely one I'm looking forward to. I'm probably more excited about the idea than Jean is. It's been a long time since I've been able to get back to my wood carving roots.

But back to the subject at hand, this should be a geat event, and I hope people can make it.

My mother might go to the summit. No, I'm not kidding. :)

It looks like fun--I sure wish I had a visit with my parents planned for that weekend!

It would be great to have her attend and yourself if your plans change.

We are holding this a little different then some of the other gatherings as we have a sign up e-form on our site to register to attend. Mostly this is just so we can have a head count for the event. It will help better accommodate those who are attending.

Best,

Matt

I'll second what Matt said Johnathan! Let your Dad know we'll have a couple more actual pieces on display too if he wants to see some more stuff from our collection.

And you need to come home soon, because I want to check out that Darkwood close hilt you picked up! :)
A big thank you to everyone that made it out to the event! I think it was an excellent time from the discussion of the custom sword process by OlliN to the dicussion on the sword in medieval culture by Bob Charron (I just downloaded a copy of Aristotle's Physics). A great time and some very unique pieces to look at from everyone's collections. Matt and Mark are producing some great pieces!

Thanks again and pictures will be forth coming!
I would like to echo what Chris said and say THANK YOU! We had a great time. I've updated the OlliN site with additional pictures and information about the day. I will tease and say that Chris and I have started casually talking about next years summit. Very exciting!!!

Great pictures Matt! Again thank you to the entire OlliN Sword team for getting the ball rolling with this. I'll try to get the sequence cutting shots online before I leave for Florida next week.
