Here are Jake Norwood and Aaron Pynenberg of ARMA sparring each other, partaking of freeplay with longsword wasters Arrow

http://www.thearma.org/Videos/JNvAP_nylon_Longswords1.MOV

(Note: It is probably better to download it first and then play it.)

That should prove edifying to any and all who view it.

There are other fine videos, both old and new, to be found there.

H Jeffrey,
How do you guys like those nylon wasters use in the video? I've been thinking about picking one up, and would be interested in any feedback.

Bill,

I haven't handled the swords personally so I cannot say, but if you haven't seen it already, might I direct you to the first post here:

I enjoyed the video! I was under the assumption that some sort of eye protection was generally used in these sort of bouts. Was it omitted this time for the video recording because both participants are skilled enough that there is no danger of injury?

No such thing.

I too enjoyed the video. Wish I had a partner to practice with.

Normally, if protection is used, it takes the form of a hockey helmet. I assume that for this particular bout Aaron and Jake were simply using control to ensure that injuries did not take place, and perhaps avoided using thrusts to the face.

That and staying half a pace out each other's range. Cool video, good to watch two serious players having fun. Cool

Hey Guys:

I am glad that you liked the video.

Yeah, if some of you do similar sparring / bouting already, then you would already know and enjoy its benefits.

If you are contemplating doing such, then I encourage you to do so. It really is a good part of a larger martial arts method. I know what it is like to practice solo, and how difficult to find a trustworthy partner with potential and dedication. But if you can find a partner to start some sparring, then it is really helpful.

I would highly recommend using the suggested hockey-helms and so forth. The two scholars in the video are at a level where they are willing to take a calculated risk and forego such. But wearing safety-gear is a good idea and I would encourage others to do so as they like for such activity.

And yeah that link that CP provides should lead you to the guy who makes and sells the nylon wasters.

Happy

Good luck,

JH

Unfortunately for us the individual who makes them has no internet, and lives in Wisconsin.
