The photos below by Cornelius Engelhardt are from the Bayerisches Nationalmuseum. This is the only Katzbalger I've seen with this type of pommel and grip treatment, and I'm full of questions about it. I would guess that this is ca. 1500-1525, but that's based only on the more typical examples with pommels of the flattened mushroom shape.

Can anybody tell me about this particular example? Date? Region of origin? Is that cord-marked leather on the grip? Wire-marked wood? Could the pommel and grip be later replacements? Is that long nut/peen block seen on any other swords of this period? Are there photos or illustrations of other Katzbalgers of this type?

So, are any of you in Munich? :D

By the way, Cornelius, do you have any photos of the other weapons in the case alongside this Katzbalger? The halberd, in particular, might help me assign a date.

Hi Sean, I was there on last sunday ( I live in Munich) but obviosly overlooked this Katzbalger .
But doesn´t matter, I dicided to visit it again soon , so I hope I can take some photos of the weapons and perhaps get some informations about this sword.

Peter: When you're at the museum, I'd be grateful if you could also photograph and/or get information on the halberd to the left of this Katzbalger. We can just see the lower part of the socket and langets on a replacement haft.

I was recently at the Frazier Museum, excellent stuff, and a really good team of historical re-enactors putting on shows as well.

Sean, it looks like we share the same alma matter, I am an Auburn graduate as well! The first time I ever saw anyone actually trying to re-create historical combat were some guys in the park near campus, I used to watch them every once in a while. It turns out one of them was Scott Wilson of Darkwood, who I have met a few times since!
