Hello everybody,
I am new on this wonderful website, and I am seeking some help to identify a sword I just bought.
It was described as a 1770's French smallsword, but because of the design of the hilt and general shape, I have some doubts about that.
I would rather say it is from the transition period between rapier and smallsword, North European 1650-60's but I am not an expert on the subject.
It is in iron, the blade is 30 inches long, the grip in black ebony wood. (see picture enclosed)
I do not have Vesey Norman's Book at home, but it looks like type 108 or 109, Plate 107.
Thanks for your thoughts on this sword !
Charles

A close view of the hilt
Charles, I don't know much about these although I have one myself. This is a really nice example you have! Your blade looks to be of very stout form much beefier than mine. The overall form is more angular with tight corners and definition to to hilt elements vs, the smooth more rounded form of mine. Really fine looking weapon!
Hello Charles,
Given the overall form of the hilt and the design details, I think you're correct in dating this in the 1600s. However, the lack of decoration on the pommel makes me think that this part may be a later replacement. The grip also looks like a replacement as well; it lacks period detailing.

It is true that I haven't seen many wooden grip sich as such... However could you be more precise about the pommel, because its shape seems quite correct, and it has the same patina as the rest of the sword. Could it be an old replacement, then ?

Charles
