Surfing around this evening, I came upon a sub-site of Osprey Publishing. It was new to me so, I thought I'd pass it on for others who may not have seen it yet.
www.essentialnormanconquest.com
The site has some interesting features like a progressive battle map of Hastings, 360 panoramic views of the battlefield today and audio clips of Saxon English and Norman French.
Ooh wow. That is really cool. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for sharing, though is anyone else having problems with the sound? Might just be FireFox...

I just gave it a quick look over and found at least nine or ten factual errors that have been supplanted by more recent research. Mainly in some of the terminology. I also have a few issues with the way in which the Norman miles and the Saxon huscarl are portrayed in the clothing section: the miles shouldn't have full-length sleeves on his hauberk, nor should he be wearing a small knife at his belt, etc. Neither of these things are substantiated by period sources for 1066. He also has a rather long grip on his sword, ala a later period longsword. Definite no-no for 1066. The huscarl is shown with a round shield, whereas this type is in the distinct minority on the Bayeaux Tapestry, our primary visual resource for Hastings.
I like the way it's laid out but I'd be very careful about using it as a primary resource for this battle. As with the Osprey books from which the information is taken, it contains a lot of old info and misinformation.
