Would anybody know what weight a genuine Sallet would be with opening visor, where they all heavy thick metal or did they make lighter ones.
Thanks Tony.
Tony,
Did you take a look at the "armour weights" thread?
I had found an open-faced sallet with the weight listed in the book Treasures from the Tower of London. I know you asked about a visored sallet, but this might give you a general idea.
From the "armour weights" thread:
And from Treasure from the Tower of London: Arms and Armour by Norman and Wilson:
7. Great Helm late 14th century: 5 lbs. 8 oz. (2.49 kg.)
8. Visored Basinet c. 1370-80: Skull: 3 lbs. 2 oz. (1.42 kg.); Visor: 1 lb. (0.453 kg.)
9. Open-Faced Helmet (sallet) 1490-1500: 4 lbs. 12 oz. (2.15 kg.)
Maybe someone else can find more weights for you
I hope this helped a bit!
Stay safe!

Weight of sallets may vary. it will depend of the thickness of the metal, the quantity of metal used, the model (Italian? Italian export? english? German? German lobstertail? or armet-sallet). It will also depend of the use. is this a prade sallet? jousting sallet? battlefield sallet? cavalryman sallet? soldier on foot sallet? It will also depend of the construction method. So there is sooooo many historical examples and reproduction examples. We can't say ; "a sallet circa 1480-1500 will weignt 4 pounds" We can just say;" we found original ones around 1480-1500 wich weight around 4-5 pounds". There are some models that weight up to 8 pounds.
For the repros a colled rolled sallet will have to be thicker than a tempered high carbon steel one for the same durability.
Etc....
