What type of paint would be used on a metal surface in the mid 15th century? I think I remember reading that Boederlam pioneered the use of linseed oils on wood in the 1390s, borrowing oils which had earlier been used to decorate armour. I think this would make sense, since oils have to be applied in thin layers, which build up into a hard enamel, whereas egg tempera would be too dry and flakey to last very long (I doubt it would even stay on metal). Does anyone know exactly what was used? I'm more than a little curious, because I think using some historically accurate paint would be a healthy way to 'spruce up' an unattractive item, aside from black helms of course (which are actually very attractive).
