Well IM refurbishing a couple older Atrims I traded for and I thought I would turn the pommel and Guard a nice Black. After careful prep and resurfacing I applied my Oxpho Blue to the guard after a few applications I had a very attractive shiney black patina. I moved on to the pommel which was actually pretty rusty. I refinished it the same getting under the rust. I applied the Oxpho with absolutly no color change hehe. It will rust but it wont blue? Id like to know which of the alloys this pommel is hehe. I wanted black fittings dagnabit. So I broke out the baking lacquer and boy are they black now and rust proof :) Gus I know you have several alloys for pommels but I can't remember what they were?
Hi Patrick
You must have an old one. 15-5 won't blue, but if you try hard enough it'll rust. I think that's what you must have, some 15-5. Seems I tried that at one time, but liked 303 better. Then dropped the stainless' alltogether until just recently..... though I really haven't made any yet, and they'll be request only.

15-5 that explains it , this is too magnetic for austenetic 303.
Will matching crosses be available in stainless aswell?
I don't know Patrick. There's been some recent interest in more 303 pommels, but there never has been much interest in 303 guards.

I must be missing something, I dont understand why anyone would want just the pommel to be stainless and not the guard? I rather like the idea of stainless fittings especially the 300 series SS. It is certainly a more practical application than using SS for blades.

Patrick,
I have three Atrims belonging to a friend in my posession at the moment. The non stainless guard is fine - it doesn't get handled enough to bother with.
The nonstainless pommel on the other hand, gets handled all the time (being the swords are XVIIIb's... and if the pommel doesn't get wiped down and oiled, it'll end up rusting, while the guard doesn't.... thus a stainless pommel wouldn't bother me at all - but I dont care about the guard one way or the other.
I'd imagine that its just laziness on a lot of peoples part.
