I like to research and draw swords, and I've been thinking of doing sword contest on this site.

My idea is to give (or preferably have someone else give) some parameters, like sword type, period, intended use etc. and a timeframe to complete the design (I'm thinking 2-3 months) and then run a separate thread with a poll where forum members can vote on the results.

But I have some things that I would like to have some feedback on:

- How many people would like to enter such a contest? How many people would you need?

- Should there be a prize, if yes, what?

- Since this is an open forum, any design posted will be more or less in the public domain (copyright laws apply of course) would that hold people back?

- Would a separate cooperative feedback thread, where designers can discuss stuff with others while designing be a good idea?

- Any comments on the parameters? How restrictive should they be? Comparing a bronze leaf blade sword design with a shamshir for instance does not seem fair as some people would be naturally drawn more to one or another. On the other hand requesting only Type XII swords would seem a bit restrictive. How do people feel about contemporary / modern designs?

- Etc.
