The shield at the top is labelled Appenzell and the badge of this canton is a black bear today. I presume whichever source you found the image in identified these as papal guards but did not give the details of the image? I don't know if Doring makes this connection. Incidentally, one curiosity of this image is the old man on the left is clealy equipped from an earlier time - the late 15th-beginning16th century. Presumably the reason for this is in Dörings text. |
