A simple question that I can't seem to find a definitive answer to: Was a chainmail coif worn under this type of helm? Seems to me that because of the way these helms were built, being rather snug in the neck, the answer would be NO. If I'm wrong, let me know, please. I'm thinking of buying one new, since no one seems to have a used one they want to turn loose. Thanks folks!.....McM
No. A mail standard was possible for the paranoid, or mail voiders on the cloth doublet underneath. But an armet or close helmet is just too protective to justify wearing a mail coif underneath.
Well, ...Thank you! After almost a month! I didn't figure there would be room(or need) for a coif underneath. I just wanted to hear someone say it and know for sure. I appreciate your insight and response, Sir. :) ....McM
---"for the paranoid."---Love that, and will use that. ;) ....McM
It is no paranoid to protect one the most delicate areas of the human body, the integrated gorget or metal system to interlock the bottom helmet with a gorget hadn't been invented yet. Ian's sample reproduction of a armet had a collar attached to it, so it wasn't considered paranoid. Finally, the need for coifs basically need with those who could afford visored helmets, which quite a bit before the advent of the armet.
"Ian's sample" ? I'm afraid you lost me there. Did I miss something? :\ ....McM

Should have been more clear in the beginning. Also, it is understandable to think it paranoid. The mail collar on the armet is tiny! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3piLpRl4QLc Also, later armets had methods to attach plate reinforcements to help withstand lances better. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if people commented on other people's armor preferences in period.
