A simple question that I can't seem to find a definitive answer to: Was a chainmail coif worn under this type of helm? Seems to me that because of the way these helms were built, being rather snug in the neck, the answer would be NO. If I'm wrong, let me know, please. No. A mail standard was possible for the paranoid, or mail voiders on the cloth doublet underneath. But an armet or close helmet is just too protective to justify wearing a mail coif underneath.

It is no paranoid to protect one the most delicate areas of the human body, the integrated gorget or metal system to interlock the bottom helmet with a gorget hadn't been invented yet. Ian's sample reproduction of a armet had a collar attached to it, so it wasn't considered paranoid. Finally, the need for coifs basically need with those who could afford visored helmets, which quite a bit before the advent of the armet.
