I'm just finishing up this brass-spined dirk. It's not an exact replica.. more a combination of various features from several antiques. The wood is from a huge cherry root. This is part of my continuing goal of replicating some of the fine details of the earlier dirk styles.. rootwood being a very common material for this purpose. This dirk is currently available ... That is really nice! I'll bet that root-wood was a boogerbear to carve. I've used it for one-piece handles before, and the grain just goes crazy. Sure is pretty, and tough too! :D .....McM

Mark... Yeah the cherry root was not my favorite to carve. I was hoping it would take detail better.. but it liked to fuzz up a little when scraping. All in all though.. if a fellow wanted to make a dirk in the highlands with limited resources... digging up a hedge root would definitely be the ticket. Still... I will always love the boxwood.

Try making a grip...heck, try making ANYTHING, out of Bois-de-arc root. I think that's the only wood on the planet that grows pre-petrified. :lol: Once you get it done, it'll last forever. ;) That's why we here in Texas use it to make fence posts.....IF you can find a piece long and straight enough. :lol: ......McM

Ha... Yeah.. I've used a lot of osage.. but never the root. Osage is beautiful but the grain sure likes to carry your blade with it. Ebonized osage would sure look nice though on a dirk...
