Hello everyone,
I just got one of GDFB's halberd heads. I am going to buy ash to mount it on. The space between langets/tangs is 1"... that's tiny! So what should the dimensions of the haft actually be?? Is it like 1" x 2" or 2" x 2" shaved down at the head end?
Pictures of originals have wood extending beyond the langets, so I imaging Im looking at 1.5" or 2" along that side (sideways side?). but what about the front-facing side that is in between the langets? I have never seen a picture of an original head-on.
Thank you for any help you might provide.
Kindest regards,
-Jason
Waldman, "Hafted Weapons ..." gives 33-38mm for the "diameter" of octagonal hafts (octagonalised square and rectangular hafts). If that's front-to-back, then side-to-side would be a little thinner for octagonal-rectangular hafts. The hafts are usually tapered a little, thickness in the middle and 2-3mm thinner at both ends. So at the head end, 30-36mm. The langets often (how often?) sit in grooves cut into the surface, so your haft could be of a thickness of the distance between the outer surfaces of the langets (about 28mm on my GDFB head).
So about 40mm by 30mm looks OK for an octagonal-rectangular haft, tapered a little to both ends, langets flush with the surface.

Excellent! Thank you very kindly for your help :) It really helps a great deal
