specifically that it might be the origin of the 'fishnet clothing' worn by ninja outfits in pop culture, now unless im sorely mistaken, edo era japan did not have a fishnet/ mesh like underclothing, did they?

so i figured the 'fishnet' was artists shorthand for drawing kusari armoour worn under the clothes as a light defense

William, your absolutely right, kusari armor was shown as cross hatching at the neck, arms and feet in Edo period wood block prints, which were the basis for later modern representations such as Japanese animation and comics. If you look closely you can also see kikko armor being worn by samurai in Edo period wood block prints as well.

You can see a kusari katabira being worn under the kimono of a samurai in this wood block print.
