Harlan Hastings, & daughter Whitney ,stopped by last night (on route to Cape Cod) with a cool assortment of toys for 'ol Mac to play with ( 2 of which were by none other than that famous Swedish swordsmith Peter Johnsson ..... but I'll discuss those in another post ;-)
A good while back I posted a few pics of a cool little tanto blade that Harlan had purchased and planned to have polished & mounted oneday ! Well, true enough, he did ..... and it came out beautiful !

Anyone care to throw out a guess (or two) as to who / whom(s) work this may be ? Mac
Very nice piece, I'd really love to see it in full dress koshirae...I think it would set a blade like that off something nice. But congrats on such a sweet little blade.

Nice!
P.S. Randal Graham and Patrick Hastings:D |
Hi Don
Your about 2/3 correct ......
The blade is indeed a Randal Graham, the habaki was made by Patrick Hastings (no relation to Harlan ;-) , and last, but certainly not least, Keith Larman did the excellent polish & shirasaya work !
Notice how the shinogi-ji ( i think that's the right term :-) was left textured, as that was Randal's original design !
Keith must have had a bit of a traditional short-circut keeping that in *g*
Also the shaping of the tsuka (grip) was wonderfully done, a very subtle curve to it feeling excellent in hand !
The habaki was also nicely done ( although my scans certainly do not show it off well ).
Patrick even did a matching texture ,on the upper part of the habaki, so as to flow along with the shinogi-ji
I hope to have a few pics of this piece, in hand, as soon as the photos are developed !
Cheers lads, Mac
The textured finish was one the things that kinda jumped out at me. I like the way it works into the overall design, though. It's always neat to see what a polisher can bring out in a blade.
Hmmm...add some navy blue silk ito, ivory same and patinated wrought iron fittings, and you can just mail that on my way :D .

As promised .... here a few shots of the tanto in hand !
( the pics are not too swift , detail-wise, but they give you a good sense of its size !
