Been working with a company having an replica of a ring Hilt sword from the dublin museum made. ANyway I needed to get some close-ups of the hilt etc as the camera I originally used was fairly old. Anyway, Juts thought some of you may be interested in the images.

Its an 11 meg file as I did no reduction in order to capture as much detail as I could.

Thanks for sharing those pictures! It was quite a hefty download for me with my good ole’ not-so reliable dial-up connection, but well worth it. I’m really looking forward to seeing pics of your sword when it gets finished and hearing all about how it handles.

Hmmm The swords you were referring to as teh monisterevan sword? Would it be one of these ones with teh 45 degree downturned bulbous pommells thingys like in the corner of one of the shots (these are teh bad ones, there is a full one)

Ah yes, That one......errrr the one we mocked for about 10 minuites LOL........So the maker put this little pommell on and the guy who bought it brought it back and said, this needs more weight in the pommell, maker adds another pommell, sword gets fecked in bin by disgruntled owner and ends up in dublin museum.

Yep....Ill see what I can do for you....Prob not till saturday or the next but I should be able to get photos of the same detail as the ones of the other ring hilt :D

Another up date...

The sword is gonna be bigger then originally requested...The smith had beaten the sword out and it was longer then expected but seemed to still handle well at its current length. He contacted me off the bat and asked if I would want a larger version or to stick to the intended size, It could always be chopped down but the current length just seemed right, completely by accident...The idea intrigued me so I said what the hey...lets make it bigger so long as it can still be wielded with one hand and not an exclusive two hander...

Tho of course huge ring hilts are not unknown....

Definately keen to see how this one turns out,
Do you have a rough,ETA,
On Hellfire's site the tang construction pic shows the pommel and crossguard welded to prevent movement,
Will your sword also feature this or have you discussed anything different,

I found the pic under tang construction on the site,
I downsized it to post below,
I didnt mean for the post to read as if the fittings were purely just welded on,
I dont think that is the case at all,it looks like the welds just take the place of the internal pinning fashion of keeping the fittings tight before handle assembly, on the example shown
but in saying that it could be down to my dodgy eyesight,
That skull looks pretty cool,

I believe that sword made for stage combat, and done that way for added strength.

Them be scary spikey hilt ends on that thing...

Howdy people. That particular sword was indeed a stage combat blade. We welded the snot out of the guard, and pommel, and then annealed the welds to give the quillons and pommel a little reinforcement. We usually file fit the guard, and then either thread the end of the tang, or put a square hole through the pommel to keep it from being able to twist and then peen the tang. That sword had the tang all the way through the pommel and welded top and bottom. I was going to put all the different methods we use on the tang construction site, but got kinda busy and havent added any new pics. With the step by step photo sessions we are going to put up, it should be pretty easy for people to see how we put things together.(At least thats the idea anyway) I like people to know what kind of things we do, and how we do it. Hope everyone enjoys the site.
