An Elizabethan source describes the axes of the Gallowglass as "six feet" long. But was the Elizabethan foot 12"? More? Less?
Apparently the English unit of one foot has been fixed at twelve inches, with 5,280 equaling a mile, since at least 1595 when an act of Parliament confirmed these units, during the reign of Elizabeth I. See http://users.aol.com/jackproot/met/spvolas.html
As I read down that page, it appears that an English foot was defined as twelve inches at least as far back as 1215.
