Thanks for these articles, Nathan! They're especially timely for me because I just finished hafting my Albion "Kern" axe and was wondering if perhaps this actually represents a Gallowglass axe. Dürer shows it in the hands of a Kern, but Kerns are most commonly associated with the bow and darts. Plus, Kerns CARRIED Gallowglass weapons and armour. Gush seems to interpret the Dürer axe as an example of the classic Gallowglass weapon simply borne by Kern attendant. That might seem like a trivial detail, but contemporary sources record the length of the Gallowglass axes, and that information makes for a more accurate replica.

Agreed, George Gush has produced yet more excellent articles. If I may make one inquiry: the Scottish are described wearing tar-stiffened leines are a form of armor. I have heard this elsewhere, but have never found a source, either primary or secondary, to describe this material and its manufacture in detail. Does anyone know of such a thing?
