Do someone know how the plates from the belts in the graves in Vendel and Valsgärde where placed?

I have a theory that I want so confirm or dispatch...

The leather rotted away, didn't it? I'm not entirely sure, but if it did then there's no way of really knowing.

I was in Uppsala not long ago and looked at some of the finds.
Those beltpieces that i saw was about 5 cm high and 4 cm wide. They still had leather from the belt on the inside that showed how they would have been attached.
I dont know how close together they where on the belt since the only leather left was on the inside.
