Bumping an "oldie but goodie", hopefully no one minds. I just wanted to pass on my thanks to Mathieu for putting together that incredibly helpful picture-guide - I just used it to make a suspension for a new scabbard I got, and it works really well. Quick, easy, and it looks great!

Interesting thread. I'm currently working on my late 14th longswordscabbard, and has somebody seen this design on some kind of illumination/altarpiece/document or something like that from the 14th?
As I read (and been looking on pictures). This period is quite hard to find 14th longswordscabbards from so if somebody have a picture of it from the 14th, pleas let me know. I will be realy glad!

I'd like to know, if you wet the leather straps before making those 15th century scabbard knots or do you tie them dry?

Another version I have seen on these knots has the working end folding back over, and feeding through with the first end, instead of tucking under the middle band. Then both ends go up to form a buckled belt loop with the tails going behind the belt, over and down the front of the belt with the buckle being placed below the belt; formed by two overlapping rings or something similar to a Conway buckle.

I also wouldn't mind seeing the rear attachment point for the two straps on the scabbard...anyone have pics?

I have to say, I find it difficult to really tighten this knot, and especially after the leather dried, it has wiggle room to move about ...and I never get the back sides anywhere near neat :/

Or do these straps have to be very thin and flexible, and be tied whilst dry?

Sorry for the thread resurrection. But I got myself some leather and some tools and am actually looking into doing this type of sword belt.

I have a kingston Arms Type XIV, and I wanted a way to hang it from a belt. The knotted way seems pretty simple (I have seen similar ones that are riveted to hold onto the scabbard with pressure too.)

My main questions now are the general width of these belts usually. I have been looking at fittings, and Makeyourownmedieval has affordable ones. Tods stuff has good ones, and also parts I cannot find anywhere else (belt slider and hook). Though the width of things seems to be different for each thing. Seems 20mm would be a decent width, and I can do some tapering on the end parts.

From what I understand, I make a belt, with a slider that has an eyelet to accept a hook. Seems simple? Then I knot two other straps to the sword. The top one having a buckle on it on the trailing end. The other ends leading to a hook.

Though I did notice that the leather I got is only 50" long rather than the usual i see of about 60. But it is 3" wide, so I can get multiple strips out of it as well.

20mm - 25mm is a good width for a longsword belt, but use thick leather at around 3.5mm 1/8" (not sure in ounces as we don't use that system over here)

Using a slider etc that I sell is fine and looks dandy, but it can be done just by making a loop in the two hanging straps and threading the belt through that loop and so avoids any hardware.

Wow, been 2 years! I ended up giving his a try!

This is a Kingston type 15 sword I got from kultofathena. It has a ridge on the throat.

So I got a really long 3/4" piece of 6oz leather. A bit thin, but I was going to tie it, so I thought i'd get it thinner.

I simply followed the pictures and it ended up really good. It is nice and tight and wont easilly slip down. I need to really pull on it. I think if I wet the leather and tied it tight it would be even tighter and woudlnt go anywhere.

Think I will dye it. Not sure if I want to make a whole belt, or have a hook on the back facing strap to attach it to another belt.
