hi there,

i have an old sword which no longer has a grip. any advice on how to go about affixing a grip, how to do so and what materials to use, would be very buch apreciated.

simple
just bring the blade to a good blacksmith or an armourer and then ask him the refinish the handle. He'll just has to remove the pommel, make a new grim and refix the old pommel or make a new one.
With my L'Archevêque we did that with an Hanwei SH2250.

thanks for the advice - problem is, i don't think i'd want to have the pommel removed, it is very firmly affixed and has been so for the past 300 odd years. i don't want to do anything which could possibly jeopardise its stability.
surely it must be possible to re grip it without removing the pommel?

Simple enough - take 2 wooden slabs, carve slots in each to receive the tang, glue together, shape the outside of the grip, then wrap with whatever you like over it all. No pommel to remove and historically correct :)

Better than that. Use the two woden slabs fix them with linen cord (really small one) glued to the wood. After that glue really tight thin leather

Do you have any photos of the sword? You could also ask for some advice from the people on the Antique and Military Sword subforum of www.swordforum.com --there are some fairly recent threads that address grip restoration.
