That Deltin set is a steal at the moment (although it is still below reserve). I just don't trust eBay that much, and I don't have a small pile of cash to risk at the moment, so its a bargain I guess I have to watch sail away to somebody else.

Joe, if it serves as any comfort, I've made over 150 purchases through eBay over the years. I had one problem five years ago where eBay / PayPal resolved it favorably for me.

This auction is for a rare antique Scottish Jacobite Targe. A reputable Scottish sword dealer says it is Pre Culloden (pre 1746) targe. It has a beautiful brass center boss and leather work with brass appointments, there is red fabric behind the hearts that is worn and faded. The back is covered in furry hide, there is straw behind where it sits against the arm. The leather has some crazing and wear to the front but it is not bad especially for the age of the piece. The front hand hold is worn and has a split at the base. The leather on the other strap is a replacement and is not attatched on one side, the buckle is older and possibly original.

It measures approx 20- 20.5 inches across.

I'm with Joe on my distaste for e-bay. I really don't have a problem with e-bay itself, but rather the entire internet auction process. I've seen far too many forgeries of swords, antique firearms, etc., being sold on-line to ever feel comfortable with the process. I would NEVER purchase a high priced antique weapon from a site like e-bay. Those things really need to be seen in-hand with any appropriate documentation before I'd consider them. Of course, this isn't the fault of the process itself and buyers ultimately need to exercise responsibility in educating themselves on what they're buying, but it's made me very hesitant to jump in as a buyer. On the selling side, I've sold one item on an e-bay type site and the overall experience was so aggrivating that it will probably be my one and only experience. I did sell the item eventually and the site itself wasn't the problem. However, after fielding lord knows how many inane e-mails from potential customers, many of which were answered in the auctions text, as well as everyone wanting something for nothing, I finally decided it wasn't worth my time. I actually prefer selling items on places like the Marketplace forum, classifieds, etc. It really doesn't make a lot of sense since it's all electronic but it does seem a bit more personal to me.

The internet auction concept seems to be a viable one that a lot of people are apparently satisifed with, I'm just not one of them.

Still, that is quite a deal on that DT rapier and dagger set.

Well, this thread wasn't started to discuss the merits of internet auctions, but...

I've bought about 40 items off eBay and have had pretty good success and luck finding deals. I've never been on the seller side of things.

As with any purchase from anywhere, there is risk associated with it. The buyer needs to make sure they know what they're getting in to.

I think any more discussions about the merits of internet auctions might be better discussed in a separate thread. I made this one simply to let readers know about items of potential interest on eBay.
