Short sword
Hi to all. This is my first post here. My name is Giuseppe Maresca, and I'm an italian collector of ancient weapons and hobbist bladesmith.
I would like to share some pics of a sword from my small collection, and I will be grateful if you will help me to identify it.
It seems to be a kind of falchion. A one handed, short and heavy sword, with an asymmetric cross section, sharpend for right handed swordsman. The handle seems to be made of horn. It's very heavy for a so short sword, and rather difficult to wield.
Overall lenght : 63,5 cm
Blade lenght : 46 cm
Guard width : 12,8 cm
Blade maximum width: 5,5 cm
handle width : 3 cm
Thickness : 8 mm
point of balance is 9 cm far from the guard
Weight : 1,25 Kg

Marked : A Striberny - 1.R 273.

Left flat side

Hi and welcome to the forum!

You will find a dagger/short sword here that is just like your´s : http://asp.thetisweb.com/czernysasp/scheda.as...amp;ris=10
Thank you very much Mathias, and great link.
Got this part of it:

Austria, Mod. 1862

Wish I could read the rest.
I really don't know, but reminds me of those trench fighting knives/shovels.
Those kind of weapons usually go under the name of faschinenmesser. Did some googling and found some information and a picture of it here: http://forums.swordforum.com/showthread.php?s...adid=11702

I used to have one of these choppers. Thier primary purpose was a a side arm for use in cutting timber, brush ect. for enginering (sp) work and gun emplacements. The particular one you have is identicle in form to the one I once owned and mine was Austrian.
