I'm not exactly sure what the story is with the squid. It's a ubiquitous feature on this scabbard type (I have numerous examples I worked from) that seems to be a sea shell sitting on a pedestal with four curly legs. Actually, calling it a squid seems to take less time : )

The price for this scabbard is $595 and my standard gladius baldric is available for it as well. I'm currently working on a complete makeover of my site that will include all of the Albion Next Gens and Museum Line, as well as quite a few more photographs I've never published before.

I'd really dig seeing some of the originals on which you based yours.

Does anyone have any illustrations of the originals to which we can compare?

I think it maybe out fo print, but in the book "Weapons of the Romans" by Michel Feugere, there is a drawing of an orginal. It looks very close to the one made by Mr. Fletcher.

It is on page 114 in the printing I have. The "squid" is shown with cape clearly in figure "B", and another similar cape is shown in figure "A." They are said to be from Rottweil. I was just given a scanner. Is there any laws about posting photo's from books if it is not for profit? Let me know, I will post the page on the site.

Some of my best sources for this sort of thing are photocopies from some German texts, sent to me by Matthew Amt. These are pages of archaelogical drawings of fittings, etc. I've got one page featuring rows of just "squids", for instance.
