Attachment: 52.22 KBI'm not normally a big fan of the Scottish basket hilts, but those Vince Evans ones are nice enough to make a convert out of me. Now I have a new kind of sword I need an example of, and it is all your fault! So many swords to collect... so little time.

This is my opinion, nothing more.
It makes me very unhappy to see a group of fine swords, and Mr. Wilson, it is a fine collection to be sure, to be displayed this way.
Especially swords of the stature as the Evans' baskethilts.
Crossed, blade on blade. Steel on steel. Not in my mind a proper way to treat a fine sword, but a great way to start the deterioration of time off on a great footing.
Not to mention that many folks believe crossing sword blades is very bad luck indeed, and that is some good ole Scottish folklore to boot.
Scuffs and marks from handling and use, I guess that's one thing, and in that context I'm rather pragmatic myself as far as my own weaponry goes. But if someone intentionally layed one of my pieces on top of the other in my home, they'd be thrown out and not welcomed back.
Now, I'm sorry, especially to Mr. Wilson, if this sounds like a personal attack, it is not, perhaps it's simply a matter of not giving the subject much thought beforehand...if I had a collection like yours, I'd be excited too, to be sure, to share it.
But please don't stack em up like that, for my own part as a bladesmith, it's positively heartbreaking to see. The scars recieved to the blades from that have no honor, or history.

Its ok Randal, really.
Dave is the fussiest guy you'll ever meet when it comes to his babies. I remember the first time he came to the shop, and did some cutting with us. I thought he was going to have a heart attack when I cleaned off the wood residue off the blade, and there was a couple of scratches underneath..... I had to clean them off before he and Alex left, because he wasn't lookin' so good.
He still comes up, but he won't cut plywood with his swords, nor cardboard tube. He'll cut the stuff with mine, but not his.....*g*. Consequently, I tease him all the time about the plywood I have saved for his Vince Evans pieces.....
I can see Dave fussin' over that first photo, setting stuff up so carefully, it likely took him two hours to get there. Dave scratch his babies up? You gotta be kiddin'.....
Now, maybe we should caveat this "Don't try this at home". But Dave's kool, really....... He was alive to take the photos, so he obviously didn't scratch them. His puir heart wouldn't have been able to take it.......
After all, he's one of those Skirt Wearin' Scots, and you know how fussy about their kits, they are.......

Hi Guys
Personally I luv stacking my Evans pieces ( very carefully I might add) for a good photo shoot !
Hell , Dave used a soft bed ...... I go all out and stack 'em on my deck *g* .....
Occasionally I get crazy and actually cut with them ( lighter targets so as to keep the blades pretty )
I've been know to get really sacrilegious and stick my swords in the ground (but not my Evans pieces of course;-)
As far as the superstition of crossing them .... right or wrong , I guess I'm not superstitious !
But I certainly would not take any liberties with an other persons swords without permission .
