Higgins Armory Catalogue?
Is the Higgins Armory Catalogue from 1969 worth picking up? I know the Wallace Collection catalogues are highly sought-after. What about the one for the Higgins?
I did not know they had one :)

Where is it available?

The full info is here:

Catalogue of Armor, The John Woodman Higgins Armory by Stephen V. Grancsay, curator of Arms and Armor of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Foreward by John Woodman Higgins. Copyright 1961. Privately printed with no ISBN number.

Basically, it's a 125 page hardcover book that outlines the collection of armour at the Higgins. There are one or two pages dedicated to the major pieces with a page of text and accompanying photograph(s) of the item. There are occasionally a few inset photos of details or individual pieces from an armor shown. The textual information isn't very detailed or scholarly, but does provide a very good overview of each item being discussed. The text does describe the history of each piece, its provenance, and how it was brought to the collection. For this alone, it's quite interesting.

It's a book with photos of armour. Like any of these titles, I'd say that because there are so relatively few out there, I'd suggest to anybody with an interest in these things to find a copy and purchase it.

Darn it, Mac, you're giving away my secret! :) Yes, there's one on Ebay. Now I'm gonna get outbid..... :) May the best wallet win! (That's usually not mine)
There's also a set of the two Wallace Collection catalogues as well: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=4576700708
Well I bought one from alibris for $45. Should be worth it judging by Nathan's description

Alas, someone outbid me with 4 seconds left. I hate when that happens.
I had a copy of this but I have no idea what became of it. For all I know it may be out in storage. I agree with Nathan's assesment: not a great stand-alone resource but well worth adding to an existing library simply for what it is.

Have you received it yet, Alexi? I'm curious if I missed out on anything.

I did get it but have not looked carefully through it yet. There are plenty of good quality b&w photographs, but virtually all of the pieces pictured were of later (than what I mostly care about) periods. There does seem to be some discussion on the naming and manufacture of armor in general but I have not read through any of that yet.

I still think it is a good purchase, as I have personally seen and photographed many of the pieces in the book but I need to find the time to take a careful look at it.

Alexi,
Thanks for the info. I'll have to add that to my list of future acquisitions. Does the Higgins have restrictions like the Wallace, where pieces cannot be added to or taken from the collection? Meaning, is the book still a pretty good reflection of the Higgins' collection or has the collection changed a lot in the 45 or so years since the book was written?
ya thats what i thought. its kewl eye candy for later armour, but theres not much structure to teh book.
