Impromtu get together report

Bill Grandy and Jason Elrod came out to my house today for a vist - Bill brought some of his swords, and they got a look at mine. Thought I would share a couple of pics of the "event". Was fun getting to meet both these guys face to face.

The pics are of Bill attacking an inoffensive water filled milk jug with his custom A&A smallsword, and of some of the swords we were playing with. From left to right Custom A&A Type XX, Albion Laird, Christian Fletcher hilted Gus Trim blade, A&A Henry V, A&A English Bastard, CF hilted Gus Trim sidesword, A&A custom smallsword.

Cool. So did they just show up unannounced, and armed, or did they call ahead? :D

Those are some nice looking swords (and scabbards). The A&A Henry V looks really good with bronze fittings, or at least I'm assuming that is bronze.

LOL! Nah, we were invited.

Gordon, it was a pleasure to meet you face to face finally. We'll definately have to get together again! Maybe we can organize something at some point to get all the Northern Virginian sword guys together.

(And while smallsword isn't my forte, I feel I should point out that in the second picture that's not my smallsword stance, that's me halfway into a lunge. :P )

I like the water spitting out of the jug from the first punctures.

I might point out that we deemed one jug so evil that Bill filled it full of holes, then before all the water could leak out, I hacked it apart with the Type XX.

It was fun guys - thanks for coming out.

I generally don't care for smallswords, but when I had that A&A example here for photos I found I really liked it. Neat piece.

We actually had several more swords there, somehow we forgot to take pictures of them. :eek: Also got to check out some of Gordon's armor from Valentine. 15th c. high Gothic is my favorite style!

I must say, though, while we had lots of really nice swords, I was delighted to check out Gordon's custom A&A type XXa. Now THAT'S a sword! It's smaller than I imagined, but it's still a big sword. I think Gordon said it was over four pounds, but you really wouldn't know it by the feel. It had a somewhat short blade with a very long grip, which made for a blade that could be used with quick snaps from the forearms, but massive enough to pack quite a punch. I really, really liked this one.

Thank Bill. It is just an ounce or 2 under 4 lbs. As I have remarked to Russ E. before, it has almost exactly the same dimensions at the historical Sture sword (and the XX.4 from Oakeshotts Records, for that matter, the sword it was - not based on, but maybe inspired by). Just pointing this out to say that the short blade, long grip are "historical", even though not, perhaps, common.

I REALLY enjoyed seeing your custom rapiers!

No war hammer - in fact we were careful of what we handed Jason. :D

Next time we will try to plan more in advance and get some of the rest of you guys in the area in on it.

HA! That statement would be funny if it wasn't true:p

Yeah, I missed the warhammer very much. Oh well. However, the worst part about getting together with Bill and Gordon was the fact that I was the only person without a custom A&A. I really couldn't decide which I liked more, Bill's Rapier or Gordon's Type XX.

We'll definately have to plan something bigger next time. The in-laws have 10 acres in the country just dying to be used.
