Since it's raining E.B. Erikson pieces around here, I'll offer a quick teaser shot of one he left in my care. You'll have to wait for details and more photos. Suffice it to say that it's a hanger in the style of the second quarter of the 17th c.. Oh, and it's lovely. Don't you just know that coming into the U.S. through international customs with Eljay is a laugh-a-minute? :lol:

WOW, Sean! That really IS one beautiful hanger. The grip appears to be stag -- is that right? I love the blade ElJay put on it. It really captures the period well. I'm a sucker for blades with multiple fullers!

Would this sword be considered a hounslow or a mortuary hanger? I believe I see some characteristics of both, but am not expert enough on either type to know for sure. Was it based on any one particular sword?

My 1750's British hanger was the first I had the privilege of getting from ElJay. I certainly hope it won't be my last. His workmanship is terrific, and he is a true gentleman to deal with.

Thanks, all! I'll have details soon, but for now I'll just say that it is based on an existing weapon and that it is very much in the Hounslow mode (though the original is not known to be Hounslow). There is some thought that this guard type is directly related to the Mortuary guard, and that the Mortuary may even have originated at Hounslow. And, yes, the grip is stag.

Boy that looks like a fearsome cutter. I've always been partial to that style of sword. Its got to be the clamshell and the lure of the sea and pirating and rum (boy i could really go for a pina colada now that i think about it) and yarghh! Some day...... some day......

How about a few from the reverse side to get a look at the grip? :D

I'm a little unsure about the Mortuary affiliation. Some of the early Proto-Morts were fashioned with clam-shell guards,but with the absence of scrolled side guards, don't know about the connection........but, what do I know...............
