I ran searchs through the forums, couldn't find any advice: I'm considering having a custom sword made for me in a year or two(naturally, a year or two is simply when the project starts since I'll have the cash then), and accept that it will be an expensive project; I intend to make an heirloom for my family.
I am not sure how one goes about seeking out a professional, exceptional crafter of swords. Are there big names in this market that one should know? Is there a class of company that specializes in such things? Are there people out there that will actually take time with you designing a unique sword? I'm looking at a Viking-style blade, 9th century style or so maybe, but of course, this will likely change with research..
You want Jake Powning: http://www.powning.com/jake/home/j_homepg.shtml
How about Patrick Barta http://www.templ.net/who_is_patrick_barta.php
A very nice gent, who pattern welding too.

Vince Evans recently moved up to your area.

He would be great to deal with given his proximity to you. Viking arms are one of his specialities. He's a fine gentleman and you won't find a better craftsman.

Cheers all for the advice! :D
