An old war horse(man) joins Mac's collection !
I recently acquired a wonderful old horseman baskethilt, circa 1750's, via an Ebay auction !

The seller, who resides in Ireland, picked up the piece via an old estate sale in West Chester, PA. last summer, along with several other cool swords (one of which also sold on Ebay, recently !)

For the very decent price of $1,400.00 I was able to add this nice old war horse(man) to my collection ....

The sword, although far from pristine, has a heck of alot of character to it, and gives off that certain attitude vibe of ... "I've been around a good long while, laddie, and I've seen my share of s*#! , so don't ye mess with me, now" ... Yup, right down to its re-ground tip !

I've compiled a slew of pictures of it, along with some of the basic stats, which can be viewed Here !

Any questions or comments .... please fire away !

Slàinte, Mac

Congrats Mac!

Another fine addition to your collection.
Looks like a nice old sword with a lot of character.

Good catch Mac!
Thanks, guys !

The gentleman who sold this to me , Hugh Butterfield, wrote the following :

"Hi Thomas,
I used my wifes ebay account to sell this sword. I just saw your email and noticed the myArmoury domain.
I have visited the site many times and really enjoy it.
I run a hobbysite www.armsandarmourauctions.com, for reasons that are unclear to me (certainly not the money :-)
I have been listing arms and armour auctions all over the world for the last 6 years or so.
I trust you will be very happy with this sword, I was sad to let it go but we cannot keep everything!
(try though me might)."

Small word, 'eh ! Mac

Actually there is said to be something like that at the Castle of Skokloster in Uppland, Sweden. But you better ask Joachim or Peter for the details.
Fine looking addition there Mac. Congrats! It will feel right at home with ALL the others.

The Basket Clan grows.

I see the sword is single edged so you just need to reshape the tip and lengthen the handle somewhat and you have a baskethilted katana.

It looks quite thick at the base that sword.
Congratulations, Mac! That is a fine looking piece.

Hey, Dave ....
It's possible, ? , as the overall quality of the piece in keeping with many examples of SH's work !
I'm convinced the Allan's didn't sign all their work either, as too many fine examples have their name written all over them despite the lack of signature, etc! So ya never know !

Congratulations Mac, and thanks for sharing........

Hey Mac, I just noticed something in that last pic that has me curious. It appears to have an interrupted fulled close to the ricasso. Is this just the lighting? If not is this a common feature?

Thanks,

Hi Nate

Sorry, almost missed your question !

Are you referring to the shallow grooves carved nearest the hilt, or further out ? Mac
