Never really seen any evidence one way or the other. I have an old A&A Friedrich IV Hunting Spearhead that I want to mount and need to know if I should put some sort of buttspike on it or not. Also, are there any good examples of Medieval or Renaissance hunting spears on display anywhere? Just to get an overall idea of length, any known decoration, etc.
I can't remember ever seeing them on hunting spears - of course I could be wrong though!
The Hunting and Fishing museum in Munich, as I recall, has a pretty good collection - I've been there a couple times, but it's been a very long time since my last visit.

Thanks! I'll try to find that online, if possible.
I did find a number of examples at the MET, but all photos focused on the heads, rather than an overall shot showing the entire spear (and in some cases only the head was available anyway). Interestingly they had an example that was almost identical to the Friedrich IV spearhead, with even somewhat richer decoration in terms of inlay and so forth, and a second example that, while plain and from upwards of 200 years later, was otherwise the same in overall design/form.
The one good thing were the provided dimensions for the spears, which showed an overall length of about 7' including the head, so that part at least I am confident about and matches the advertised length of the A&A version with their assembled version.
Have you tried looking at artwork? I couldn't find any hunting scenes with buttspikes on the spears. I think that even if some hunting spears had butt spikes, not all of them did. Even spear types that typically had buttspikes probably didn't have them all the time.
