I'm preparing to make some leather grips for the first time, and I want to make sure I get the seam orientation right. The sword I'm working on now is actually a saber, with no backstrap. From Peter Johnsson's thread over on bladeforums, I think the correct way is either 'a' or 'd'.

I feel like you would want the seam to face inwards where it is less visible (a). But I also think maybe it will be subject to more friction from the thumb, unless I can put it under the langet. Any advice as to which will hold up better with use?

The overlap edge should end up on one of the sides, and not the middle as your diagram has it. For which side depends on the swordsman's hand usage orientation. More easily defined, the grip seam should be on the downside when sheathed in a scabbard hanging at ones side. The direction of the top overlap seam should be running away from the fingers, but isn't as important if the seam remains invisible.

For the underside, amount it runs past the seam should be minimal. Though a good skived edge dramatically helps, if it is done correctly, and is close enough to the seam (1/4"-3/8" at most) it will remain invisible when finished.
