Hello everyone,
I am in search of a smith willing to make me a Vendel helmet, but am having trouble finding someone. Do any of you here have any recommendations?
I would try Royal Oak Armoury. I have't personally handled any of their items, but from the pictures they appear to be exceptionally well made and accurate.

Have a look at their early medieval section: https://royaloakarmoury.com/early-medieval/

Those types of helmets are also very expensive to make so keep that in mind.

Admittedly it depends on what you want. Something basic with minimal decoration won't be that bad. Full crest, covered with pressblech, garnet inlaid eyebrows, etc. will be rather more.
Scott, is there a particular helmet or helmets that you are interested in? "Vendel" covers a rather wide latitude of construction techniques and overall decoration, with a corresponding variation in price.
Well a less expensive and reasonably attractive one is made by Windlass.
Found here: https://www.reliks.com/helmets/norseman-helmet/
This is a Canadian vendor, but they do ship to the USA, although there must be local to you source depending on what country you live in.
The helmet seems like a close duplicate of some of the helmets in the movie BEOWULF & GRENDEL, I have one of these helmets that looks near identical, but mine has a maiile neck protector in addition.

Actually the one by Windlass is so close that I think that either Windlass copied the movie prop helmet, or they actually made the prop helmets for the movie ?
Like this one with the maille neck protector: https://www.english-heritageshop.org.uk/collectables/beowulf-helmet
The one in the link above seems to have butted maille, mine has riveted maille and may be from a different production run as I got it years ago from KoA and might actualy have been one of the movie prop helmets ?
( Note there is also a near identical version made by Deepeeka instead of Windlass, but looks not as well made ? )
Here is a YOUTUBE review by Skallagrim of one made by Royal Oak Armoury:

This may help you in deciding if the high quality is worth the money and wait for a custom Vendel Helmet.
Hope this helps.
Note the video is also funny in addition to a revue ..... :D

Hey Tyler,
Thanks for the suggestion. They do look very well made, but it seems their wait time is pushing 3 years, and their not even open to new orders at the moment.

Hey Arne,
I would really prefer a Valsgarde 8, but I know that may be a bit too pricey. I also like the look of the Vendel 1 and 12, and would be happy with one of those.
You night want to take a look at Thorkil from Poland.
His vendel helmets look very nice in the pictures - I haven't seen one in real life though and I have no idea how long production times are.

My father has a vendel helmet from Thorkil, the craftsmanship is topnotch. No idea about price or wait times. For a quality reproduction from a respected and experienced armorer I would expect both to be quite high.

This one is available. Not quite Vendel style but may give an indication regarding price:

Google says it's 1,147.54 United States Dollars (4500PLN). That's cheap for his work actually. Top notch and no years long wait!
Hi Scott,
I recently came across this maker:
http://truehistoryshop.com/product-category/helmets/early/
They offer a few different examples, which look pretty nice. I don't personally own any pieces from them but I am actually tempted to get one.
