Well, I don't quite know if this is the proper place to post this, but I came up with a hilt design between classes today, and I'd like to hear your opinions. Especially the negative ones, because negative and constructive criticisms are the only way I learn.
It's supposed to be a 17th century cavalry hilted sword, perhaps a quasi-mortuary/walloon sword, straight bladed, double-edged. The loops at the back portion of the hilt are supposed to be just decorations on the pierced-plate side of the hilt, similar to the hoops on the CASI mortuary sword.
Is this a feasible design? Thanks everyone in advance!

That looks like a thumbring with another ring attached to it. The CASI mortuary sword has a thumb ring, as far as I can recall.
If that is a thumb ring, you should swing it 90 degrees around the grip so that it would be pointing towards us in the picture on the right. (see the thumb ring in the schiavona in my avatar)
It's not a thumb ring.
Here's a very crude rendition of the sword in hand. It was done in Microsoft Paint, so sorry that it sucks.

i like it, i think i personally would like the blade a little wider, but that is just personal opinion. i do like the hilt though, I do think however that the thumb-ring like things are a little little funny looking. other wise it looks really good. I am also impressed with your ability to use microsorft paint.
again, looks good. :)
again, looks good. :)
It looks a lot like a sword in the Tower of London that's been attributed to Oliver Cromwell, from around 1640. I'll see if I can find a picture online for you; the only picture I have is in a book I got years and years ago called Treasures from the Tower of London: Arms and Armour.
Here's a slightly improved drawing. Still done in Paint.

Hi Geoff,
Well, let's see if I can get the photo of a very similar hilt to yours posted here!
Nope, no go! Since I can't seem to post photos on two different websites, I think our squirrely Thai ISP (Loxinfo) is up to new tricks!

That's a bummer, ElJay. If you could post the pictures when you can, that would be fine. my ISP here at my university is a little on the strange side lately too.
So finally (I hope), here's the scan of the hilt that's very similar to the one you designed.
