So what's the answer? I am not experienced enough with real medieval artifacts to be able to tell which of these (your first one or the two for comparison above) are real and which are fake. For my own education I would love to know, especially if there's proof such as demonstrated use of an identifiable modern repro.

Unless I am mistaken (a distinct possibility), I think the sword on the left in the post above yours is the same as the sword under consideration, which would suggest it's believed to be authentic. At least the pic of the peened tang looks like the same sword to me.
Yes it is the same sword on the left and the description says it is genuine ... But what do you notice of comparable with the sword on the right?
They have different guards ?
Similar blades, pommels similar but with different-sized raised bosses, same flat spot ground across pommel after peening, peen still secure on both, similar very smooth, gradually tapering tangs?

If there's a Windlass hologram peeking out from under the patina I'm going be profoundly ashamed.

Xavier, can you finish up your game and enlighten us?
For me, the most obvious thing is the difference in surface texture. The texture on the one on the left looks "sharp" and "fresh", while the one of the right is smoother, more like what I'd expect from a very old artifact, but I can't hang my hat on that. The one on the left may been recently found and recently conserved, and I'm not experienced enough to make that call.

Also, the tang of the one on the left feels more.... modern. The change from parallel sides to tapering, seems too sudden and precise. I'm used to seeing steadily tapering tangs. Again, limited experience here. Lastly, the pommel on lefty seems massive compared to right, but again, not enough experience to call that out absolutely.
Ah, I see what you mean.
