Hello, everyone, I'm Cam. I figured I'd join the forum after lurking off and on over the last few years. It seems like a nice place to learn and share information regarding topics I'm sure most of us have common interest in.

That said, I guess I'll get straight to it.

I have a problem regarding a spearhead. Whilst testing a Baltimore Knife and Sword spearhead, I managed to bend it. I have experience in fixing blades, but bends I've never really tried much on. Especially high end pieces like this. Unfortunately I can't attach the image, but the bend is minor - 25 degrees, approximately, and maybe an inch from the tip. I don't want to wreck the temper or anything, if possible. I'd even be willing to cut it off and refile, or something of that nature. If anyone here has experience with these sorts of things, I would appreciate any kind of input.

By the way, apparently it has been forged in the traditional manner.

If you bought that spear head new from BKS, it should be under warrantee for life. However, you said you were 'testing' it....depending on what you were doing with it, the warrantee may or may not still be valid. Contact BKS, or Matthew Stagmer....I believe he is a member here. It sounds like it may have been tempered a little soft, but a spear does need to be tough so maybe it was deliberately so.

Either way it will likely bend back without too much trouble. To help keep the stresses down, simply heat it up with a blow torch carefully until it gets to a yellow colour which will be around 400-450 Fahrenheit or 200-230 centigrade or a bit darker which will be a bit hotter and at this temperature it won't mess with the temper.

Whilst it is hot, put it in a vice and bend it straight; work quickly and reheat if required.

It should bend back fine I would think.

Keep a spray bottle handy, just in case you go a little too far!

You could contact BKS anyway; I believe they'll stand by their product even if they didn't sell it directly.
