Hi All,
Having bought a wonderful book on maces, I thought I have better make a couple and here are two.
The book is by Stoyan Popov and he has proposed a more comprehensive mace typology than the previous work by Kiripinchnikov that incorporates many more styles and I was particularly taken by Type XI which are characterised by twisted flutes and dated to the 11th - 12th C
I went for two extremes, one with many smaller flutes and one with fewer and much larger flutes.
They were mainly made in iron, though sometimes they were in bronze as these ones are and here they are mounted on ash shafts, though they are also be available unmounted.
The smaller mace weighs in at 367g/13oz
The larger mace weighs in at 460g/16oz
I hope you like them.
Tod
PS, can't help thinking the larger mace would be a great Steampunk walking stick head.......

The larger head looks very much like a pinion gear. Hmm...

Yes I do like them, and I can see using these for a walking stick or a short walking staff.
What is the internal diameter of the mace heads for the ash shafts ?
With the smaller one I could see putting together a " Pilgrim's Staff " using one for the top and a second one around 18" below.
Or use the bigger one for the top and the smaller one for the lower one.
Something like this: http://vonmeer.deviantart.com/art/Medieval-Pi...-155569712
But using the mace heads instead of wooden spheres on the stick.
So what are the prices on these ?
Those are visually a lot of fun, Leo! I love "tools" that are elegant AND functional.

Thanks Jean and Gregg.
The larger head fits the hand very nicely and there is something 'fiddleble' about it so that you keep spinning it in your hand; a very tactile form.
The larger head is £85 unmounted and the smaller £65
