Well, I just received my order from Find-It Armoury: A Sallet (remember to pronounce it right when you read it :) ) and a Great Helm. Both are supposedly 16 ga. And came WELL oiled :wtf: They're not the most perfect helmets, but I gotta say, for the price I'm very happy.

Now, for you experts out there, a coupla questions... Would these helmets historically have liners, or just be worn with an arming cap? Also, would there have been chin straps to keep them on? And lastly, if they had these things, how would they have been properly attached?

Scott, you can do one of three things with both .

1) leather suspension (four or six panel tie up) riveted in and an arming cap, or
2) leather lining band riveted in with a quilted liner sewn to it, or
3) lots o' foam padding

The sallet should be lined but great helms weren't always. When they were the liner seems to have tended to lace into the helm through a series of paired holes rather than being riveted in for the most part. When they weren't the wearer usually had a sort of thick cylindrical cap the the helm rested on ( theres even one made from coiled rope sewn together in Stones Guide) .
