I am thinking about putting some 1/2 hole (#4) grommets in my Axel Pettersson jacket so that I suffer heat less. Have any of you done this and have advice about it? Right now I am considering Rolled-Rim Stainless Steel Extended-Neck Teeth Washer grommets from McMaster Carr. Any thoughts?

Just to give you a graphic image about what it might look like here attached is something I did in photoshop a few years ago as a concept drawing for a gambison. I also drew a more complex design with extra metal bits for a theoretical fabric and metal reinforced gambison, but not a historical design.
Now I never had this made, but maybe the visuals can be useful for you in deciding if the concept would work for you ?
Not sure how well you can modify an existing fencing jacket versus making or having made a new fencing jacket from scratch as a custom project.

Grommet only version.

The more elaboarate version using round headed rivets and metal staples to create a better cut resistant surface.
I am thinking of just 10-20 for ventilation only. Not for cosmetics or protection.
I have several of them installed now. It does seem to help keep me from overheating as much, but not as much as I had hoped, yet. I'll probably add six or eight more soon. They have 7/16" holes and I haven't run into a steel training sword yet that passes through even a little.

Okay, I have 26 7/16" hole grommets in it now. At class last night I was notably less overheated. Instead of having a sweat soaked shirt under it at the end, I had one that was only damp in a few places. It was much easier to think when I wasn't so close hyperthermic too. Not sure there was/is any interest in this so I will stop posting about it unless I get a question.

The only production models with ventilation I've seen are the Superior Fencing (sup-fen) model.
