Hungary became a strange land; Closed because political reasons (called "rationalisation and integration" ), I hope one day it will open again.

That is too bad. The museum certainly has some interesting pieces in their collection. Do you know what they plan to do with the collection? I always hate to see that occur anywhere. In my town they recently broke up the collection of the country historical museum to make way for an interactive museum honoring a country musician who grew up in the area. There was supposed to be a plan to open another historical museum displaying the collection but that has been 5 - 6 years and nothing further has been said or done.

Anybody knows, or guesses what is this oversized saber supposed to be? :eek:


Perhaps it's just perspective - distance from the camera/other sabers - playing tricks, but it looks rather peculiar.

I wrote to the owner and asked him about that saber.

At least one of those axes is a re-purposed woodworking axe of a common European pattern. Here are similar examples with shorter handles:

The unknown original owner could have carried the giant sword to battle. But it takes more than one person to lift it, I believe.

Well, hopefully those items went to another museum, and not someone's personal collection.

Such a shame, I was lucky enough to visit that museum that holds some rather interesting pieces, including several models of messers, and a longsword-size katzbalger.

It was a private collection presented to the public.
